7.5.4.4.2 External 
Auditing
A team outside the company usually performs external auditing. A com-
pany that takes the ISO should also be a company whose products and 
safety we can trust. But, in reality, in some countries you cannot have 
this list and in other countries the companies have an ISO, but they don’t 
apply any of the system for quality assurance, as most of the companies are 
focused on quality control rather than the quality assurance or developing 
a quality manual.
Therefore, in major projects the owner should formulate the team from 
his quality department to make external auditing for any company, engi-
neering, contractor or service provider.
To be sure that the company will be well prepared for this visit from the 
owner auditing, he or she will gain a lot from the big project, but it will be 
difficult in small projects. So, to control this issue a company needs to be 
registered with your company and they should provide their prequalifica-
tion. At this time, you can perform the auditing to decide if they will be 
registered with company’s vendors list or not.
The team from the owner company should be competent and have 
strong skills and knowledge in the quality management system and how to 
audit the other company in their country or overseas countries.
First, the contractor or the service provider will deliver his quality man-
ual, which will be reviewed by the quality team. Then, they will visit the site 
with a representative from the company to show their system in action and 
to inspect it. The process is as follows:
• Visit the supplier site to perform a complete inspection.
• The supervisor will describe to the team exactly how their 
Q.C. system works.
• The contractor provides examples of Q.C. documentation.
• It is possible for the team to ask for a previously inspected 
batch to be rechecked.

• Check if the test equipment is regularly maintained.
• The rejected or unacceptable products are clearly marked 
and segregated to avoid any chance of their accidental inclu-
sion with acceptable products.
