1.What is the aim of Developing Intercultural Competence?
Intercultural competence is the ability to interact and communicate with people from different cultures in a respectful and effective way. It is the bridge between diversity and inclusion and is key to creating welcoming learning environments.
2. What can you say about notions of culture?
A culture is a way of life of a group of people--the behaviors, beliefs, values, and symbols that they accept, generally without thinking about them, and that are passed along by communication and imitation from one generation to the next. Culture is symbolic communication
3. What do you know about visible and invisible sides of culture?
The visible part of culture is the way we live and interact with each other, our traditions, food, and attire. The invisible part is our preferences, opinions, values, beliefs, and value systems
4.Explain main three areas of culture: product, behavior, idea.
As shown in Figure 1, culture can be classified into three layers: (1) physical or material culture including food, garments, and transportation related objects, (2) social or behavioral culture- including human relationships and social organization, and (3) spiritual or ideal culture -- including art and religion.
5.How can you differentiate Big C and small c?
Little-c creativity is what we find in the everyday production of novel solutions. Big-C creativity refers to major productions of importance.
6. What can you say about elements of culture?
The major elements of culture are symbols, language, norms, values, and artifacts. Language makes effective social interaction possible and influences how people conceive of concepts and objects. Major values that distinguish the United States include individualism, competition, and a commitment to the work ethic
7.Language and Culture (greetings, ways of expressing politeness, ways of addressing)
Brown and Levinson (1987) suggest that there are four types of politeness strategies. They are bald on-record, negative politeness, positive politeness, and off-record strategy.
What are 5 politeness strategies?
These strategies include juxtaposing criticism with compliments, establishing common ground, and using jokes, nicknames, honorifics, tag questions, special discourse markers (please), and in-group jargon and slang
Examples of positive politeness include compliments, and might also include statements such as, "I really like the way you've done this," or, "It took me forever to figure this out, but what I eventually came to was…" or,"You know it's always important to me to do the best job I can, and I know the same is true for you ...
