Theodore Dreiser: Biography
The most well-known representatives of the classical school of natural science, Theodore Dreiser, came to literature when world readers plunged into the works of Hamlin Garland, Stephen Crane and Frank Norris. In his works, the writer developed the main ideas of his contemporaries with the help of his own example, studied the interconnection of natural forces and social trends in human life. As a novelist, Dreiser did not forget the theme of the "curse of the body", which was always sympathetic to the characters of his work. Childhood and youth Theodore Hermann Albert Dreiser was born on August 27, 187110 in Terre Haute, Midwestern Indiana. The Dreisers lived poorly. The head of the family took on any work, but there was very little money to support nine children. Because of the bitter financial situation, the future writer left his father's house after graduating from school and went to work in Chicago. There, the young man, who was not afraid of hard work, managed to work as a cleaner in a restaurant, a foreman in a store and even a porter. In 1889, the ambitious young man successfully passed the entrance exams to Indiana University in Bloomington. However, due to the lack of money for completion, the educational institution Herman did not succeed. In search of a better life, Dreiser moved11 from city to city. For many years (from 1892 to 1894), Theodore was able to visit the newspaper in Pittsburgh, Toledo, Chicago, St. Louis and New York. Personal life The first wife was the literary genius Sarah Osborne White. The writer met the red-haired beauty in 1893. Then Theodore Dreiser, a young reporter for the St. Louis Republic newspaper, was appointed to accompany the pageant winners. The best teacher"Chicago world exhibition... Among the winners was his future wife. The girl's innocence, beauty and shyness attracted the writer. In the euphoria of love, the couple got engaged. However, soon after, the prose writer began to notice important differences between him and his lover. The society of that time condemned physical contact between young people who did not legalize their relationship. Dreiser was not close to such a philosophy, but White firmly believed in the structure of marriage and did not allow Theodore to approach her for five years. intimacy happens only after the wedding. On December 28, 1898, Herman Theodore Dreiser and Sarah Osborn White were legally married in Washington, DC. Since the writer was in constant contact with the intellectual bohemia of that time, he tried to include Sarah in this circle. This attempt was unsuccessful: the girl could not relax in a bourgeois environment that was alien to her. However, this situation did not prevent the young woman from observing the indifferent attitude of the representatives of this society towards her husband with the concept of femininity. It is known with certainty that Dreiser had other women in New York. He quickly fell in love and just as quickly cooled down. This happened before Thelma Cudlipp appeared in the writer's life. Thelma was the daughter of one of the magazine editors edited by Dreiser. Herman admitted to his wife that he had feelings for another. In 1909, their divorce took place.
