Empirical Observation: I will collect data from a sample of people regarding both socioeconomic
status and education
Analysis: Using that information, I will either see a relationship between the two, or not see one.
Theory: Based on my analysis, I will establish a theory that speaks to the relationship (or lack
thereof) between the two
Hypothesis: Based on my theory, I can state a hypothesis for how future studies on this topic would
most likely play out
Two Types of Approaches:
Deductive Approach: a research approach that starts with a theory, forms a hypothesis, makes empirical
observations, and then analyzes the data to confirm, reject, or modify the original theory.
Inductive Approach: a research approach that starts with empirical observations and then works to form
a theory.
