Two Types of Research Methods: 

 

Quantitative Methods:  methods that seek to obtain information about the social world that is already 

in, or can be converted to, numeric form. 

 

Qualitative Methods:  methods that attempt to collect information about the social world that cannot be 

readily converted to numeric form.

Example:  In regards to the example, I have identified the 

following:

Population:  American Adults (ages 25—40) 

 

Sample:  I am going to survey 500 people 

 

Generalizability:    If I am able to look at the sample results, and use 

them  to  make  an  inference  on  the  relationship  between  education 

and socioeconomic status in the general population
