Research Methods:  approaches that social scientists use for investigating the answers to questions. 

Example:  I want to look at the relationship between socioeconomic status and education. 

Example:  I could look at this topic and collect either quantitative or qualitative data: 

 

 

Quantitative: I could collect the following information:   

 

For socioeconomic status, I could look at the amount of money in their savings account. 

 

For education, I could look at the highest level of education they have achieved. 

 

 

Qualitative:  I could collect the following information: 

 

For socioeconomic status, I could look at the type of car they own or how large their house is. 

 

For education, I could ask them to explain what education means to them.
