Before beginning my research, I have to identify: 

 

Population: a group being studied 

 

Sample: subset of the population from which data is collected; a census is a sample that attempts to 

estimate the size of the entire population 

 

Generalizability:  the extent to which a finding can be applied to a group larger than in the study 

Example:  If I go into this study thinking a higher socioeconomic status causes a higher level 

of education, I could find: 

 

 

Causation:  socioeconomic status does indeed cause a higher level of education 

 

Reverse Causality:  actually, a higher level of education causes a higher socioeconomic status 

 

Correlation:  while socioeconomic status and level of education are related (as one increases, so does 

the other), but there is something else causing this to happen 

There are three types of relationships: 

 

Causation:  the notion that a change in one factor results in a corresponding change in another 

 

Reverse Causality:  a situation in which a researcher believes that A is causing B when B is actually 

causing A 

 

Correlation:  simultaneous variation in two variables 

Example:  In this example, I have identified the following variables: 

 

 

Dependent Variable: level of education 

 

Independent Variable: socioeconomic status 

 

Example:  However, I could also find in my research some other variables: 

 

 

Moderating Variable:  Type of High School—a higher socioeconomic status causes a higher likelihood of 

attending a private school, which in turn causes a higher likelihood of continuing education 

 

Mediating Variable:  Parent’s Level of Education—if one’s parents have a high level of education, it 

increases one’s socioeconomic  status (inheritance/trust funds/etc.) as well as increasing the pressure 

for them to continue their education. 

There are four types of variables: 

 

Dependent Variable: the outcome you are trying to explain 

 

Independent Variable: factors that you believe have a causal impact on the dependent variable 

 

Moderating Variable:  a factor that affects the relationship between the independent and dependent 

variables 

 

Mediating Variable:  a factor that is positioned between the independent and dependent variable, but 

does not interact with or affect the relationship between them
