spreadsheet, n. ~ A computer program that provides accounting worksheets, each sheet containing rows and columns. Notes: In a spreadsheet, a cell may contain a formula that displays a value that has been calculated from values in other cells. Changing the value in one cell affects the values in other cells that refer to the changed value. VisiCalc was the first spreadsheet program for personal computers. An area set aside to allow materials to be stabilized before being placed in or removed from storage. – 2. A holding area. RT: archival storage conditions Notes: Staging areas are commonly used to allow time for materials that are stored in cold storage vaults to come to room temperature before being used by patrons. They are also used to store new accessions so that the materials can be reviewed for insects, vermin, mold, and other contaminants prior to accessioning, and to hold materials prior to destruction. stamp, n. ~ 1. A device used to print, impress, perforate or emboss a design or letters on an item, especially paper. – 2. A mark made by such a device. – 3. A small piece of printed paper attached to a letter or container to indicate the payment of duties, taxes, or postage. – v. ~ 4. To mark with a stamp. RT: emboss, time stamp Notes: Stamps1 are usually small and intended for hand use. The letters or design are typically raised. Stamps are commonly inked or used to transfer a pigment or metal from foil. A blind stamp uses no such ink or pigment, and leaves only an impression of the design. stamping, n. ~ The act of placing a mark (a stamp2) on materials to indicate ownership, legal custody, review, or approval.
