silver mirroring (often mirroring), n. ~ A metallic sheen in high-density areas of
photographs caused by the migration of silver to the surface.
RT: bronzing, tarnish
simple act, n. ~ Diplomatics · Something done toward a single purpose by a physical

70 (Duranti 1998, p. 110): The examination of documents issued by public
authorities reveals the existence of two distinct types of actions, or act: those which
were undertaken by the authority on its own direct initiative, of its own will, in the
context of its political-sovereign capacity; and those which were initiated by other
juridical or physical persons, public or private. In the former case, the moment of
the action comprises one simple act consisting of the order given by the authority to
its chancery to compile the document expressing its will. In the latter case, we have
a compound act or procedure, consisting of well-defined stages or phases.
simple copy, n. ~ A copy that reproduces the content, but not the format, of the original.

simple object access protocol, n. (SOAP, abbr.) ~ An XML-based protocol for accessing
services over the Internet using Hypertext Transfer Protocol (http).
RT: Extensible Markup Language
267 (SOAP 2003): SOAP Version 1.2 (SOAP) is a lightweight protocol
intended for exchanging structured information in a decentralized, distributed
environment. It uses XML technologies to define an extensible messaging framework
providing a message construct that can be exchanged over a variety of
underlying protocols. The framework has been designed to be independent of any
particular programming model and other implementation specific semantics.
simple resolution, n. ~ A measure that deals with matters entirely within the prerogatives

sink mat, n. ~ A mount with additional space between the cover and the backing.
BT: mat
Notes: Sink mats are used for flat objects with significant depth, such as a seal,
a magazine, or a glass plate. They are often used for warped items. Material
between the cover and the backing, often layers of mat board, form a space (sink)
that surrounds the item.
sizing, n. ~ 1. A substance used to fill the pores in fibrous materials. – 2. The process
of treating materials with such a substance.
Notes: Sizing is commonly added to paper, either by adding it to the pulp during
manufacture or by coating the surface during finishing. Sizing gives paper a
smooth surface that prevents ink from bleeding into the fibers. In some photographic
processes, the paper is sized to keep light-sensitive salts on the surface in
order to increase image sharpness. Sizing is commonly made from starch, gelatin,
alum, albumen, or rosin.
skew, n. ~ 1. Imaging · A condition in which the axis of the original is improperly
aligned in the reproduction. – 2. Imaging · A condition in which angles in an original
are distorted in a reproduction. – 3. Computing · A misalignment of a tape
system, resulting in data being written to or read from the wrong location.
Notes: Skew1 causes a reproduction to appear to be at an angle. – Skew2 may be
caused by rotary imaging equipment.
