Notes: The Soundex system was initially patented by Robert C. Russell in April
1918 (US patent 1,261,167). Soundex is sometimes used generically to mean any
phonetic index.
soundtrack, n. ~ 1. Moving images · The portion of a film or moving image recording
that is reserved for the audio signal. – 2. Moving images · A commercial
recording of the music from a motion picture.
Notes: In motion pictures on film, the soundtrack1 is a physically separate area
in which the audio signal is recorded. The soundtrack is commonly an analog signal
recorded as patterns of light and dark running parallel to the frames that make
up the picture. The signal may also be recorded on a magnetized strip that is
coated along the length of the film. In digital and magnetic recordings, the soundtrack
is usually a separate channel from the visual signal. – A soundtrack2 is not a
complete transcription of the audio portion of a film. It excludes most or all dialog
and includes only the music.
