ESL teachers not only teach phonics, but for younger learners phonics is essential for language learning. In the importance of communication skills, reading, writing and speaking are grouped together. And to develop effective communication skills, it is essential to be strong in all three areas. Phonology (production) studies how the movement of air and vocal organs coordinate in the production of sound. As when we pronounce words like read, write, pen and paper, it belongs to pronunciation phonetics. On the other hand, auditory (perceptual) phonetics is a broad field in which the ability to distinguish sounds, length, pitch, and loudness affects your response. It simply means the ability to decode what you hear and what you feel. Phonemes are the individual sound units that make up words. For example, the word "sat" is made up of three phonemes: /s/ /a/ /t/. Phonemic awareness is not only the recognition that words are made up of small sound units, it is also the ability to break, manipulate, and blend phonemes. For example, /s/ can be omitted and replaced with /m/ to form the word "mat". Young readers need to be able to apply their understanding of phonemes to begin reading. Phonemic awareness helps young readers build on another important part of reading: phonetics. Phonetics (the relationship between letters and sounds) is based on the perception of phonemes. When a child understands and can manipulate sounds with words, they are ready to translate this knowledge into print. Teaching morphology, the study of words and how they are formed and used, is part of structural knowledge. When we look at language through the prism of the units of meaning in the word, that's part of morphology. When we work with morphemes, we are dealing with the smallest unit of meaning that exists in our language. Morphemes can be single letters, or alphabetic units, that have meaning and may or may not stand alone. The English language is considered to be deeply spelled. Morphology includes prefixes, suffixes, free morphemes, linked morphemes, roots, and combinations. The English writing system is morphological or representative of important parts (morphology) and speech sounds (phonology). Download 0.51 Mb. Do'stlaringiz bilan baham: |
