IR final task 1&3
Norman Angel
Norman Angell was a British economist and writer who is best known for his work on international relations, particularly his contribution to the development of the idea of international interdependence. The main postulates of Angell are: International Interdependence: Angell argued that the economic, political, and social systems of states are so interconnected that they cannot be isolated from one another. He believed that the interests of states are interdependent, and that cooperation and peace between states is necessary for the well-being of all. The Illusion of Power: Angell argued that the pursuit of military power and domination by states was misguided, and that military power was not a reliable source of security or well-being. He saw the pursuit of military power as creating a dangerous illusion that would lead to war. The Importance of International Institutions: Angell believed that international institutions and organizations were important in promoting cooperation, peace, and stability between states. He saw these institutions as essential in managing the interdependence between states and resolving conflicts. Illustration of events/cases in IR: The League of Nations: Angell was a strong advocate for the League of Nations, and saw it as an important step in promoting international cooperation and resolving conflicts between states. The League of Nations was an international organization founded after World War I with the aim of promoting peace and cooperation between states. The European Union: The European Union is an example of Angell's work on international interdependence and the importance of international institutions in promoting cooperation and stability between states. The EU is a regional organization of European states that has helped to promote peace and stability in Europe, and has facilitated economic and political cooperation between its member states. The Global Financial Crisis: The Global Financial Crisis of 2008 is an example of Angell's work on international interdependence and the dangers of economic interdependence. He would have seen the financial crisis as an example of how the economic systems of states are so interconnected that a crisis in one state can have a major impact on the global economy.
