ENGLISH DIPHTHONG NO. 6: /ie/

1. 
   /ie/ is a , falling,diphthong which starts at about the position of the English short /e/ and terminates at about /shwa/.
   
2. 
   Forms of spelling:
   

(e. e. r), as in deer, sheer;
(e. a. r) as in near, beard;
(e. r. e), as in here, mere;
(e. i. r), as in weird;
( I, e, r), as in pierce, fierce;
(i. a), as in Ian.
(e. o) theory.
(3) Words for practice:
pier, beer, tier, tear (of the eyes), dear, gear, cheer,jeer, mere, near, leer, real, fear, veer, theatre, seer, sheer,. Here, hear, year, weir, weary.

3. 
   pathans often add a r-sound at the end of the diphthong when there is an r in the spelling. Thus, they would pronounce “near” /nie/as/nier/, “fear /fie/as/fier/.
   

ENGLISH DIPHTHONG NO. 7: /eə /

1. 
   /ee/ is a diphthong which starts about half-way between the English vowels No.3 and 4 (e and ae) and terminates at about /shwa/.
   
2. 
   Height of tongue: half-open.
   
3. 
   Part of tongue raised: the front.
   
4. 
   Position of lips: spread to neutral.
   
5. 
   Opening between the jaws: rather wide.
   
6. 
   The tip of the tongue is touching or nearly touching the lower front teeth, and, as in the case of all normal vowels, the soft palate ia in its raised position and the vocal cords are in vibration.

   Forms of spelling:
   

(a. i. r), as in pair, fair;
(e. a. r), as in bear;
(a. r. e), as in spare;
(e. r. e), as in there;
(e. i. r), as in their;
( a. r), as in scarce;
(a. e. r),as in aeroplane /eereplein/

(10)pathans often add a r-sound at the diphthong when there is an r in the spelling. Thus they would pronounce “rare” /rea/ asreer/, “dare” /dea/as /deer/.
