Part of tongue raised: the front.

  • Position of lips: spread to neutral.

  • Opening between the jaws: rather wide.

  • The tongue-tip is touching or nearly touching or nearly touching the lower front teeth,and; as in the case of all ordinary vowels, the soft palate is in its raised position and the vocal cords are in vibration.

  • The vowel begins at the position of vowel No. 5(a:)and immediately proceds in the direction of vowel No 2(I).

  • Forms of spelling:

    (i),as in time, mind;
    (y), as in fly, try;
    (I. e), as in cried,pie;
    (e. i), as in either,slight,
    (u. y),as in buy;
    (e. ye), as in eye;
    (o. i), as in choir;
    (a. i. s),as in aisle.

    1. To pronounce the english diphthong ai correctly, it is not necessary that should actually be reached. A ceftain portion of the movement towards is sufficient to give the proper offect. In other words, a diphthong of the type(ae) will suffice. Even (ae) would not strike an Englishman as wrong, as long as the e-element is not too open.

    2. Words for practice:

    Pile, bite, tie, dine, kind, quite, guide, child, mine, nice, like, right, rite,Wright,write, five, vine, thy, side, resign, height, while, time, idle, night, child, find, fly, pie, tried, cries, height, sleight, either, neither, eider, buy, eye, choir, aisle.
    (10) Like all other diphthongs, this diphthong too is short before unvoiced consonants and longbefore the voiced ones and when in an open syllable.
    Thus ,hi,hide, would be longer than ,hight,
    (11)(aI)sometimes forms a so-called triphthong with a following schwa, as in fire which is generally transcribed faie. In pronouncing this triphthong, the tongue never really goes near to the I-position; (eie) more nearly represents the actual pronunciation. The ,levelling, of the triphthong is often carried so far that it is replaced by a diphthong ae or even simply alengthened a; Thus fire is often heard as (fea) or (fa). This levelling of the triphthong is particularly common when a consonant follows, as in fiery, society, entirely, violin, giant, hire, it,, ect. (instead of, feieri, etc.).
