The Example of Observation Report

Observer’s Comments: 
 
I found this class was interesting. The 
teacher came to the class on time, and then 
started the lesson by greeting the students to 
settle up the class. When the teacher greeted 
the students, the suddenly quite, even 
though there were some students were still 
talking with their classmates. 
Personally, I like the way the teacher 
introduced what they were going to do in 
the class. He gave clear instructional 
objective at the time. The way he punished 
the students who didn’t bring their first draft 
was also very good, and it seemed that the 
students didn’t feel that they were being 
punished. He also double-checked and had 
students to show him their first draft to 
make sure every student has their own first 
draft. Interestingly, he did that in not very 
serious face expression and he was not mad
so the students still felt comfortable but 
surely they were embarrassed and regretted.
It was a little bit funny, when the student 
asked me to come to the front, since he 
found me didn’t bring the first draft writing. 
He didn’t really know who his friends are. It 
is understandable, since they had just met 
three times in this class.

students had their first draft writing with

“Good, now you, go to the library, 
and print out your first draft!”
While waiting for them, the teacher asked 
the rest students to see and analyze their 
writing based on the checklist they have in 
the course book. He also wrote down these 
things on the whiteboard: 
 Subject & verb 
 Capital letter at the beginning of 
sentence 
 ?, !, at the end 
 Complete sentence 
 Everything else connected to the 
sentence. 
“Now see and check your writing, please 
refer to the checklist on your book about the 
description essay. Pay close attention to 
these things on the board; subject & verb, 
capital letter, punctuations like full stop, 
comma, question mark, etc., the sentence 
complete or not”.
A student asked the teacher, “which one is 
correct, my friend and me, or me and my 
friend?”. The teacher then explained that it 
should be “My friend and I, because they 
are functioned as subject of the sentence”. 
Some students also asked him about their 
problems they had in their essay writing. 
The teacher explained to them individually. 
He then wrote some sentences/phrases on 
the board: 
 Thesis statement (Topic + focus + main 
points) 
 Introduction 
 Content, paragraphs - Topic sentence 
Conclusion 
“Guys, please note those things on the 
board”. He explained that an essay should 
have a thesis statement, and it should have 
topic, must focus, and consist of main 
points you want to write. An essay should 
have introduction, content, and conclusion. 
I think the teacher did
n’t want to lose his 
time, so his asked the rest of the students to 
start reviewing their writing, while waiting 
for some other students printing out their 
essay. He had a clear instruction and 
direction on what the students had to do. He 
also wrote on the board, yet explained what 
he wanted the students do at the time.
The interaction between the students and the 
teacher was very good. I tried to catch what 
students asked about, but they frequently 
asked individually to the teacher and in lower 
voice. The teacher sometime explained to the 
class, and sometime explained the problem 
students had individually, because they have 
different problems. But to general problems, 
the teacher explained them to the class and 
even wrote them down on the board, and 
called students’ attention on his explanation.
