Teaching writing on the topic of Theatres for the pre intermediate

What you will need:
The list of the names of films, cartoons and books which they have not read ot watched yet.
What to do:

  • Before giving the task ask some questions on guessing skills. Ask such questions like:

    • How do you think does guessing skill play a role in writing skills? Possible answers:

    • Why do you think so? Possible answers:

      • Because guessing is about predicting about the content and plot of the reading passage.

      • Because it can be useful in writing also. For example, in the case if we will be given such task in writing to write what the heading of article/passage or some film, book, cartoon is about.

  • After listening to their answers, say thank you for expressing their thoughts regarding the questions.

  • Divide students into pairs and give each pair the name of some book or film which they have not read or watched yet.

  • Tell them to write what about the book or film can be.

  • Students should use their imagination to predict the plot of the given book or film.

  • The pair or pairs who write the closes plot will win.

  • In the end ask them to read their work to the whole class.

The exercise can help improve students’ writing skills of deriving the information, content or idea about the passage from the heading or name of some book or film.
Activity 8: Draw a map (homework or a project work)
The activity is aimed to give the opportunity to learners to describe the place where they live or giving description of their hometown.
What you will need:
Clear instruction to explain the activity.
What to do:

  • Before giving instructions for the task ask some questions about giving directions. Questions maybe such as follows:

    • Have your ever given directions or showed the right way to a stranger?

    • Have you ever showed the right way to a foreigner?

    • If yes, could you do it properly so that a stranger from the same country or a foreigner from abroad can understand you?

    • What languages did they speak to you?

  • Give the instructions to the students.

  • Draw a map of the place where they live or the map of their hometown on the paper of A4 format.

  • Draw a little map, not the map of the whole city or town.

  • Write down what each building is on the map.

  • Write down the names of the streets, avenues if any.

  • On the back side of the map give description of the map in the form of giving directions to someone who does not know your place.

  • The directions should be clear so that stranger will easily understand and can find his way to the needed place for him or her.

  • Present it to the whole class and teacher.

  • Try to use colours while drawing the map.

The activity improves students’ writing skills in showing the way and giving directions. It also increases learners’ vocabulary skill.
Activity 9: Creating the heading
Students will be required to create the heading and make up a story based on the picture.
