Teaching writing on the topic of Theatres for the pre intermediate

What you will need:
Handouts with the sentences for correction mistakes on capitalization.
What to do:

  • Give the students some questions about common mistakes in writing process. Ask them:

    • How do you think why writing skill is one of the most difficult language skills? Possible answers:

      • Because writing skills have a lot of requirements regarding effective writing.

      • Because it is restricted type of language skill and we cannot freely express our thoughts using just simple sentence structures as in speaking. Therefore, during the process itself the writer may make a lot of mistakes.

    • In your opinion what are the most common mistakes made by writers?

    • How can we prevent ourselves from making mistakes?

  • Distribute the handouts with the exercise to the students.

  • Tell them to correct the mistakes in the sentences where it is needed.

  • After finishing ask them to read their answers and ask their opinions about the reason why they think their answers are correct.

The exercise improves the effectiveness of students’ writing skills. It decreases the possibility of making the same mistakes by the students.
Activity 6: Exercise for choosing an appropriate vocabulary
Students should choose the suitable vocabulary according to the content of the passage.
What you will need:
Handouts with the passage. Passage should have word choice in some of its parts/sentences.
What to do:

  • Before beginning an exercise give the students some questions about the importance of correct vocabulary choice in writing. Such questions like:

    • How do you think is it important to pay attention to the word choice in writing? Possible answer:

      • Yes, it is. While writing any kind of work we should choose words carefully.

    • Why is it so important? Possible answer:

      • Because if the word does not suit to the content of piece of work, the text will not have the meaning and readers can barely understand it.

    • In this case how can we improve our vocabulary skills?

  • Then distribute handouts and tell them to do the exercise for word choice.

  • In the end check them orally with the whole class.

  • Do not forget to ask their opinion about the reason of their choice for the particular sentence/part of the passage. Give question like:

    • Why have you chosen this or that word for this sentence?

The exercise give opportunity for the learners to realize the importance improving their vocabulary skills for the effective writing skills.
Activity 7: Writing reviews
The activity is aimed for guessing skills of learners.
