The Disadvantages of Using Pictures

  1. A picture is static and provides only one isolated viewpoint, whereas learners' movement provides them with constantly changing viewpoints.

  2. A picture is only two-dimensional and thus lacks the depth of whatever it is attempting to portray. It also lacks the texture (feel) of whatever it is attempting to portray.

  3. Due to a shortage of photocopying or duplicating capabilities, it is often impossible to have enough copies for the entire class, making their use useless.

  4. The teacher must be inventive and competent in order to make effective use of pictures. Few teachers have these talents, and even fewer are able to find someone to do the drawing for them.

USE SLIDES TO TEACH VOCABULARY
Most people have Google Slides or other slideshow presentation software, and it's quite simple to utilize in the classroom. You can quickly create a slideshow template for any vocabulary phrases you select by following Marzano's six steps to better vocabulary education! Plus, you can effortlessly add web images to your slides using Google Slides, making using photos with words a breeze.

  • Begin with your first slide, which displays the vocabulary word and the image you'll use to educate and relate to it. Because students will hear you pronounce the term and then repeat it after you while looking at the spelling of the word and the picture beneath it, that's all you'll have on the first slide.

  • Duplicate this slide and add a student-friendly vocabulary definition. As you read the definition aloud, the students will follow along. You might also ask them to repeat the definition.

  • Duplicate the first slide as your third slide, but add a short text that relates to the visual and includes the vocabulary term.

This is where you create the link between the vocabulary and the image, and you discuss how the image symbolizes the word. Using the previous example of the word "kindness," if you had a photo of Mr. Rogers, the statement may be something like this: "On World Kindness Day, we can celebrate kindness by wearing a cardigan just like Mr. Rogers." You can then discuss how this incredible man was recognized for being a kind and generous human being, citing examples. Of course, you may need to dig up certain specific examples in order to provide your pupils with proper information.
