April 14, 2009 11:52 MAC/RAMS Page-1 9781403_947369_02_cha01 PROOF 1 Discourse and Business Communication: an Introduction Piotr Cap University of Łód´z and University of Economy in Bydgoszcz Even a brief look at the contemporary publishing market in the broadly demarcated field of humanities and social sciences leads to the follow- ing question: what is it about discourse and business communication that makes it such a popular field of investigation? Is it the institu- tions, organizations, which give business discourse some common social relevance and thus grasp the attention of scientists working in differ- ent disciplines? Or is it, as Grant and Iedema (2005) or Braecke et al. (2006) would say, the very discourse, a medium which, once used in an institutional or commercial setting, starts manifesting some special and uniquely interesting features worth noting in their own right? While looking for the definitive answer (if ever possible) would entail a massive ethnographic survey among the researchers – a project which, to the best of my knowledge, has never been attempted – a more invit- ing alternative is to take these questions as prompts for explaining the generic complexity and methodological heterogeneity of business discourse. Defining business discourse, its hallmarks, domains, method- ologies as well as types of data investigated, is a necessary prerequisite for specifying what kind of input can be expected from a volume such as this one, and what the apparent constraints are on provid- ing a genuinely fresh contribution to the field, which has already been extensively explored.
