There is no doubt that global shortage of drinking water has become a major problem facing every region of the world. This essay will examine foremost reasons of this problem and suggest effective solutions to stop wastefulness and unwise utilization of water resources. The most serious cause is the increased use of water for industrial and agricultural purposes. Over the last century, industry and agriculture have excessively wasted water to produce food and other necessary goods. This has led to serious consequences that are growing in alarming rates. For instance, statistics shows that developed countries utilize more than a half of fresh water for industrial purposes, while developing states use most of their water resources on agriculture. The most effective solution can be to limit water usage in industry and find alternative and ecologically friendly materials and methods of production. This might help developed states save more than a third of their resources. Moreover, agricultural countries should develop effective watering methods using high technology and modern equipment to reduce wastefulness of the most essential resource on our planet. Another problem is wastefulness of people when it comes to water usage. Generally, people do not feel the responsibility that resources are diminishing and future generations might face unimaginable disasters because of this. To illustrate, to wash a car, people use a hose and waste around 50 liters; meanwhile, a bucket of water efficiently used could be enough for this purpose. This can be dealt with educating and raising awareness of general public. Advertising campaigns should aim at saving water and also efficient technologies need to be introduced. Uzbekistan, for example, uses TV advertising to inform the people of the importance of saving this resource and the advert is shown on all channels, mostly at prime time. In conclusion, the leading causes of this problem are associated with growing demand of industry and agriculture as well as careless attitude of people. Unless governments introduce stricter control to implement efficient technologies and educate the public, the issue might put the future of mankind under a huge threat.
