Today, more emphasis is put on the youths to achieve higher academic success and it is argued for this reason that non-academic disciplines such as PE, art or cookery should be excluded from school curriculum in order to give schoolchildren more opportunity to fully involve in academic subjects. I completely disagree with the exclusion of non-academic subjects from the school program because these disciplines allow harmonious development and prepare young people for life.
It is essential to note that school curriculum is formed by highly skilled and experienced specialists who have been working with children for years and know their physiological and mental state well. Thus, they consider that non-academic subjects provide mental as well as physiological development. For instance, attending PE lessons can help students balance academic and physical pressure in their lives which will energize them to further continue their learning process. Although academic disciplines shape the future of children, they solely cannot provide them with a happy balanced life. Thus, non-academic disciplines have a necessary role to play in young people’s learning.
Furthermore, non-academic disciplines like handicrafts, cookery or art prepare learners for real life by teaching them basic skills necessary around the house. Life does not consist of only work, there are other situations which require much more practical skills. To illustrate, supposing young people studying abroad by renting a flat with their friends, they will definitely cook for themselves and repair things if they go wrong. In such situations lessons taught at school become an enormous help to them.
In conclusion, although some people believe that only academic focus is important, my personal view is that non-academic disciplines should not be removed from school teaching programs.
