There is a debatable question about the purpose of universities. While some argue that universities should only provide opportunities for better job prospects, others hold the opinion that universities serve wider purposes than that, thus, they have more benefits. Personally, I believe that these houses of enlightenment enable individuals to broaden their horizons and look at the world from a different angle. On the one hand, university education promotes job opportunities for individuals who want to work in the offices of elite companies and government structures. Therefore, many young adults seek a tertiary degree with the hope that it will help them achieve professional success in their lives. As if it was made with that purpose, all prospective jobs require a higher degree and realizing this, young people tend to think university is meant to prepare individuals for jobs only. On the other hand, any individual who stepped to the doors of a university understands that it is another world, it ushers the way toward the world of knowledge. Knowledge, in turn, is a power able to change the world and course of development. Thus, from the time they were first established, higher educational institutions have served as the houses of enlightenment and ensured generation and accumulation of knowledge which subsequently led to scientific and industrial revolution whose result is today’s technological and informational progress. There is no doubt that universities can contribute to the development and progress of the sciences as well as well-being of the society on the whole. In my opinion, I believe that university education, apart from what has been said, broadens every individual’s horizons and enables them to look at the world philosophically to un- derstand the course of development and action as well as cause and effect and other laws of life. For example, a person with a degree has better understanding of situations than an ordinary person and can successfully deal with conflicting situations. A minute of talk with a university professor has so many positive impressions that one cannot help thinking about positive influence of universities on every individual. To sum up, university education not only benefits individuals for their job prospects, but also it has to do with the progress in science and technology that has transformed our lives in the last two centuries. In my view, universities can also promote personal development and broaden every individual’s outlook and understanding of the world.
