Present simple passive with comparative language
We can use present simple passive with any graph. We can use it even if the chart shows data from the past, the present or future. We can say; It can be seen that broccoli imports increased throughout the period. Broccoli imports are shown to have increased throughout the period. I would only recommend using this grammar for IELTS T ask 1 one or two times.
Present simple Sometimes you will get a question in the Academic writing Task 1 test that doesn’t state any year. For example; In Qatar , spinach is the most imported vegetable, whereas garlic imports are the highest for Oman. Qatar and Oman both import 300 tonnes of ginger . Past simple is the most in common tense in grammar for IELTS Academic Task 1because charts show data from the past. For example; In Qatar spinach was the most imported vegetables , whereas garlic imports were the highest for Oman. Qatar and Oman both imported 300 tonnes of ginger .
Prepositions for graph writing
Some graphs show you data for just one year ,and others show you data for several years. However , the preposition phrases in the rest of this lesson only used when chart displays two or more years. For example ; In Qatar , the amount of spinach imported in 1990 was 150 tonnes. In Qatar ,450 tonnes of spinach were imported in 1990. In Qatar spinach imports had a figure of 450 tonnes in 1990.
Prepositions for describing data Pea imports began at 150 tonnes . Pea imports started the period at 150 tonnes. Pea imports started with 150 tonnes Most graphics will require you to compare data from two or more time periods, for example, past and present or present and future predictions ,so you will need to use a range of different tenses in your essay, as appropirate. The key word in the sentence above is ‘appropriate’. Whilst you will gain marks for using a good range of tenses in your writing IELTS Task1 essay, you should never do so just to show that you know many different tenses. Only use the tenses that is 100% correct expressing a specific a piece of information. It is accuracy that the examiner is looking for.
