Come and discover the joys of one of Canada’s oldest and most popular recreational activity. Whether it’s a leisurely skate in the crisp winter air or a breakaway up the ice, Toronto’s skating programs has something for everyone. Indoor arenas and outdoor rinks across the city offer many leisure and instructional skating opportunities. Integration Services may be requested if an individual requires assistance to participate in recreation programs. Refer to the Adapted Recreation Programs and Integration Services section or visit toronto.ca/accessibility. What to wear and equipment Clothing Wear gloves or mittens, and layers of clothing that are warm, water-resistant, non-bulky. Helmets For helmet requirements, see section on “mandatory skating safety equipment requirements.” Visit toronto.ca/skate for more information on helmet education and awareness. Skates Proper fitting skates are required. The rule for purchasing skates is one size smaller than shoe size. New skates do not come sharpened and will require sharpening prior to the first class. All children, youth, and adults participating in our instructional programs must wear a CSA approved hockey helmet. Program Information • Participants may not be able to relocate if they select an incorrect level. Please read class descriptions carefully. • Parents/caregivers are requested to remain at the facility during lessons. • When registering for Learn to Skate Levels 2-5, a participant must have passed the level preceding the level being registered for. Proof of passing may be requested on the first day of the session. Participants will be assessed if there is no proof of passing the preceding level then the participant will only be put in the appropriate level if that class is not full. • Where demand is high, skaters may be restricted to one Learn to Skate program per location per season. Preschool Programs These programs introduce new skaters under the age of 6 years old to the basic skills of skating. Focus is on building the skaters comfort and confidence on the ice through fun activities and games. The 30 minute session consists of a warm up, group lesson, games and free skate. All participants must wear skates while on the ice. CSA approved hockey helmets with full facial protection are mandatory for all Preschool Programs. Child with Caregiver • One adult (14 years of age or older) must accompany each child enrolled. • Caregiver must be a competent skater and be present on the ice to assist their child for the entire class. • All participants must wear skates while on the ice including the caregiver. • Caregivers must wear a CSA approved hockey helmet. Preschool-Beginner • Child must be capable of going on the ice alone. • Child should be able to stand and walk on skates with straight ankles off the ice. • Caregivers are not permitted on the ice. • Instructional focus will be on Learn to Skate: Level 1 curriculum. At the end of the season, participants will receive a progress report. • Ages 6-12 years. • Classes include a group warm up, instructional lesson and individual free skate time. • Participants must complete one level before moving on to the next level. Learn to Skate: Child-Level 1 Prerequsite: Level 1 is for participants who are new to skating and are unable to skate the width of the ice surface with a glide. Swimming is a great way to maintain lifelong fitness and wellness. It is also a great way to stay cool in the summer and keep active in the winter. The City has something for everyone! We offer a wide range of high quality and affordable instructional programs including learn to swim, training to be a lifeguard, developmental leadership skills, water sports and more! If you can’t go, let us know! – If you are unable to attend the program you registered for, contact your local community centre or call 416-338-4386 so the spot can be offered to someone else. General Information Change Room Age Requirements Children seven years of age or older are required to use the change room designated for their gender. If these accommodations do not work for you, please speak to facility staff to make alternate arrangements. Swimming Attire When using the pool, all swimmers must change from street clothes to a swim suit and/or clean clothing used for swimming only. Clothing worn in the pool must permit individuals to participate safely in programs. For swimmers who are not toilet-trained, we recommend wearing specially designed swim diapers or pants. Cotton diapers are only • Child may obtain a GREEN wristband (in addition to orange) to access deep end. To obtain GREEN wristband child must complete the facility swim test. permitted if snug fitting pants or swim suit are worn to cover the diaper. Ordinary disposable diapers are not permitted. Once immersed in water, the absorbent material in disposable diapers becomes too saturated causing pieces to break off and clog the pool’s filtration system. Gender Specific Swim Programs When participating in gender specific swim programs (women or men-only), only people of the same gender will be permitted to access the pool deck, spectator gallery or viewing areas. Note the following exceptions: • Caregivers/parents who are participating in a program (e.g., guardian, leisure swim) can bring children 0-7 years old of either gender to gender-specific programming. • Children 0-7 years old of either gender will be allowed in the spectator designated areas, where available and when appropriate supervision by a guardian of the appropriate gender is present. Important Notice Serious Medical Conditions Those with serious medical conditions should be accompanied by an individual knowledgeable of their condition and responsible for their direct supervision. Individuals are advised to consult a medical doctor before swimming. Admittance/Supervision Requirements for Children To ensure that children have a safe and enjoyable swimming experience, the City of Toronto has implemented a wristband procedure. This procedure allows staff to identify children at greater risk of accidents and ensure adequate supervision when in the pool area. All children 9 years of age and under will be given an identifying wristband by the facility staff. To determine requirements and identifying wristband colour, refer to the following chart: Age Admission Supervision Requirement Child:Caregiver Wrist Band 5 years and under Always accompanied* 2:1 Pink 6 years Always accompanied* 4:1 Orange • Child must still be accompanied* at all times. 7-9 years Accompanied* 4:1 Orange OR pass facility swim test Green • If child passes swim test, the ORANGE wristband is r emoved and replaced with a GREEN wristband, allowing child unsupervised access. • Accompaniment r equirement: caregiver to be on-site and within the enclosure until such time that a 7 – 9 year old successfully completes the facility test. 10 years+ No supervision required • Child will be r equired to do facility swim test and obtain a GREEN wristband to access deep end of pool. * Accompanied: Must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or designate (caregiver) who is at least 14 years of age and is responsible for their direct supervision. Caregiver must be in bathing attire and within arm’s reach of the child(ren) at all times, both in and out of the water. Child to caregiver ratios may be increased if approved personal floatation devices (PFD) are used. Admittance Requirements for Day Camps and Groups All groups should make arrangements with the pool prior to their arrival. Before entering the facility, groups must sign in with facility staff.
