Khorezm with Dasht-i Qipchaq, Mawarannahr and Iran in the process of 
establishment of the Khiva Khanate», analyzes the influence of external factors 
such as political atmosphere and correlation of forces in the international arena on 
the internal socio-political situation within the country. Particularly, a special 
attention is paid to the Khiva Khanate’s relationships with Mawarannahr, Dasht-i 
Qipchaq and Iran during the process of its establishment. 
The third chapter of the dissertation, «Diplomatic relations of the Khiva 
Khanate in the 18
th
century and the issue of foreign relations in the state 
administration» aims to highlight the state of «Khanbazi» (the game of khans) 
that arose in the late 17
th
– early 18
th
centuries and climaxed in the middle of the 
century. The chapter also covers the general socio-political situation in the Khiva 
Khanate, its external relations and the main aspects related to the system of 
government in the Khanate.

The fourth chapter of the dissertation, entitled «The dynamics of Khiva 
Khanate’s foreign relations in 1770-1780: traditions and transformations», 
highlights the process of accession to power of a new local dynasty of Qonghrad

and its diplomatic relations with the Bukhara and Kokand Khanates, the Kazakh 
Hordes and Iran. Rivalry, increased between Russian Empire and Great Britain in 
Central Asia, clash of interests of several countries, in particular the Russian 
Empire and Khiva Khanate in the Kazakh steppe; Iran, Khiva and Bukhara 
khanates in Khorasan; Slave trade, which intensified as a result of so called 
«alaman» brigand attacks on the border territories were the main factors that 
determined the political situation in the Central Asian region in the 19
th
century. 
Taking into account that in this period foreign relations of the Khiva Khanate with 
neighboring states, besides general outlines, had some peculiarities, its relations 
with Bukhara and Kokand Khanates, Kazakh Hordes, Iran were considered 
separately.
