ANNOTATION OF THE DISSERTATION
Actuality of the theme. This master’s dissertation is devoted to the problems of defining the specific features of phonotactics, a new branch of phonetics. It is known that phonotactics defines permissible syllable structure, consonant clusters, and vowel sequences by means of phonotactical constraints, the set of allowed arrangements or sequences of speech sounds in a given language, the area of phonology concerned with the analysis and description of the permitted sound sequences of a language. This linguistic phenomenon may be found in differrent languages but it has its own typical features in each language.
The aim of the reseach is to find out the characteristic features of the investigated object - the phonotactic features of the English language, the characteristic features of all the permissible syllable structures, consonant clusters, and vowel sequences, the distribution of consonants in the syllabic structure of English words.
As the object of research we have taken the orthoepic forms and the research is carried out with the help of different linguistic and statistic methods.
The scientific and practical importance of the research lies in the fact that its results may be used in delivering lectures in the theoretical phonetics of modern English to Uzbek and Russian students, at the lessons of seminars of English phonetics.
The expected results of the research work may be formulated in the following way- to establish the characteristic features of all the permissible syllable structures, consonant clusters, and vowel sequences, to find out the nature of consonant clusters, and vowel sequences, to formulate the main rules of phonotactics in syllable onsets and codas, to offer some methodic recommendations on teaching correct pronunciation of consonant clusters in English words.
The structure of the dissertation – the research work consists of the required structure – and introduction, 3 chapters, a conclusion and the list of used literature.
