They immerse themselves in the language spoken around them and play with pitch, loudness and the sounds of speech without inhibition. In contrast, adult learners appear to have to put forth conscious effort. Even then, adult learners rarely acquire native-like proficiency. When features in the L1 and L2 are quite similar, but 142 not exactly the same, learners can easily misinterpret them as the same sound but with the help of computer programs connecting with sound students easily divided them to vowels and consonants. The English phonemes /v/ and /b/, for instance, present a considerable challenge for many Spanish speakers. To native English speakers, these sounds are two separate phonemes, but to Spanish speakers, /v/ and /b/ are allophones, for example, slightly different versions of the same phoneme ad thus perceived as the same sound. As a result, Spanish speakers may be unable to distinguish between the English /v/ and /b/ without explicit awareness-raising and focused listening practice. Suffice it to say, the influences of the mother tongue on the L2 phonology, commonly called transfer, is inevitable. When we consider general qualities of accentedness, adult learns from L1s closely related to English appear to have an easier time English pronunciation. When learning specific features of the L2 sound system, however, the perceptual filter of the L1 either clarifies or confounds the process. There are two types of transfer such as positive and negative transfer. Positive transfer: When the phonology of the L1 facilities L2 pronunciation learning, so called positive transfer occurs.
