each transaction in detail. The theory would hold that the more
transactions captured in the computer or in the ledgers, the
more control management has.
Recent research suggests the opposite. You create control
by bringing the processes under control. Processes would
include activities from new product development and produc-
tion to administration and quality control. Initiatives like Six
Sigma start to touch on these issues. The thinking is that excel-
lence does not spring from the rote recording, tracking, and
checking of each transaction. Excellence grows from analyzing
and perfecting every process in the company. 
What this revolution means—and it truly is a revolution—is
that accountants and managers would no longer be lashed to
ledgers. It will have profound effects on everything from per-
formance evaluations to product quality. The disintermediation
effect of the Internet is forecast to have a profound effect on
business processes. These accounting changes suggest a simi-
lar disintermediation in accounting.
It will be interesting to see how fast companies implement
such radical changes. The normal corporate tendency is to want
to be the 19th team on Everest, to reduce risk substantially.
This new approach places great value on rapid reaction.
Normally, something like this would take several years to imple-
ment. The growing sophistication of large-scale databases and
the software to support it may draw the moment closer.
Impact on Managers
One strong signal from all this activity is that an individual man-
ager’s skill set needs to be both wide and deep. The old concept
of doubling in brass to increase a person’s résumé applies here.
Since a lot of this change will hit the financial and management
accounting structure, having an appreciation and understanding
of the related accounting concepts would seem to be useful.
One final necessary thought on this subject. Is this just a
passing fad? If I keep my head down, will it all just blow over? I
don’t think so. The new cost and management accounting sys-
