tems pick up so many variables that are off the ledger that I
think we will see increasing use.
A Story
First, here’s a story of how two people used traditional account-
ing information of the type we’ve discussed here in their busi-
nesses. Let’s call them Butch and Bubba. They’re small con-
tractors who each got the idea that they could strike out on their
own. If they worked real hard and did most of the work them-
selves, they could underbid the other general contractors in
their area. They set up separate operations but kept in touch
from time to time.
They both enjoyed good initial success. Then, things started
to change. 
Butch had read a couple of books about accounting. As the
money started coming in, he knew he was going to need some
help. He hired a bookkeeper and, shortly thereafter, an
accountant. He wanted to use the accountant to help analyze
bids and work on his cost structure. The accountant was inter-
ested only in doing write-up work and handling compliance
issues. Butch decided to find another accountant more com-
patible with his heeds.
Meanwhile, Bubba’s business was taking off as well. Bubba
had his wife keep his books. He had always looked on account-
ants as being rearview mirror expenses with little of value to
offer. As long as the compliance filings got done, he was happy.
He found an accountant who matched his expectations. Bubba
went out and bid on more jobs. Undercutting the other contrac-
tors was easy and he started to get more work. Bubba added
two more crews to try and keep up. The money was now rolling
in and he and his wife decided to have some of the luxuries
they’d denied themselves for several years.
Butch, working with his accountant, prepared several bids
and lost them all. Finally, he won one. With two jobs now, he
brought on a crew to handle them while he split time between
