A famous English doctor hated to hear his patients speak about their illness­es. He always asked them to be brief and to the point111 Once a woman who had burnt112 her hand came to consult him. She did her best to be laconic. She showed the doctor her hand and said, “A bum.”
“A compress ['kompres]," was the doctor’s reply. The next day the woman came again and said, “Better.” “The same,” replied the doctor. A week later the woman came and asked, “Your fee?”113 “None,” said the doctor. “I’d like all my patients to be as sensible as you are, madam.”

The old gentleman seemed to feel sorry for the tramp.114
“Goodness!” he cried. “And you say you’re 15,000 miles from home?”
“That's right, sir,” answered the tramp hopefully.
“And where's your home?”
“Australia.”
“Take this, my good man. And how do you expect to get back?”
The tramp looked at the penny in his hand. “Well, if I don't do better than this,” he said, “I suppose. I'll have to walk.”
