§2.4. Geological and hydrogeological factors and forecast of changes in the state of groundwater

The study area is located within the southern part of the vast intermountain Kashkadarya basin, located in the south of Uzbekistan in the Kashkadarya river basin. The northern border of the basin runs along the Karatepa, Zirabulak-Ziaetda mountains, the western border - along the heights of Jarkak, Mubarek, Dengizkul. In the south and southwest, the sands of Sundukli separate it from Turkmenistan. In the east, the Gissar and in the southeast the Baysun mountains separate it from the Surkhandarya region.
Brief review of geological knowledge. In view of the large amount of stock and archival materials devoted to the study of the geological structure, hydrogeological and engineering-geological conditions of the Kashkadarya depression, the author analyzed the works that are directly related to the problem of the study area under study [37; With. 130-134, 57; 278-s., 71; With. 106-110, 73; With. 157-167]. Mass development falls on 1961–1982. within the Karshi steppe and the left-bank part of the Kashkadarya river valley. To clarify the hydrogeological and engineering-geological conditions of the Karshi steppe in connection with the development of the territories , engineering-geological surveys were carried out at a scale of 1:50000 [53;350-p., 54; With. 50-57, 57; 278-s., 72; 95-s.].
In 1974, a monograph by G.A. Mavlyanov, K.P. Pulatov, Yu . genetic types of rocks [57;278-p.]. In 1972–1982 Yu.Irgashev, M.F.Achilov, N.M.Kayumova, M.U.Mirsaidova, M.Z.Nazarov, K.P.Pulatov and others under the guidance of K.P.Pulatov systematized the available engineering-geological materials research. Based on them, a series of large- and medium-scale maps was compiled for the Kashkadarya valley, including a geological and lithological map of Quaternary deposits, a geomorphological map, a map of the thickness of the subsiding stratum, followed by a forecast of subsidence of loess rocks of the territory [57; 278-p.].
In 2009–2012 Sh.N. Norkulov and others carried out ecological-hydrogeological and engineering-geological studies and mapping at a scale of 1:25000 within the city of Karshi and the adjacent territory (report of the Karshi EGG and IGP for 2009–2012 gg.).
In the geological structure, the most ancient within the described region are the Mesozoic deposits - М z . In the study area, these deposits lie unconformably on highly deformed Paleozoic deposits.
Cenozoic deposits - Kz in the described area are divided into two divisions. The lower part of the section is composed of sandy-argillaceous and carbonate rocks of marine origin (Paleogene), while the upper part is composed of predominantly continental rocks (Neogene).
