B) Explain the meanings of the following English proverbs and sayings:
1. When a man’s coat is threadbare, it is easy to pick a hole in it. 2. Knowledge is a treasure: but practice is the key to it. 3. Men make houses, but women make homes. 4 A man will never change his mind if he has no mind to change. 5. By the street of “By-and-by” one arrive at the house “Never”. 6. Use soft words and hard arguments.

I Formulation of the case-task:The Subject matter of Theoretical grammar
The grammar of a language consists of the sounds and sound patterns, the basic units of meaning such as words, and the rules to combine all these to form sentences with the desired meaning. The grammar represents our linguistic competence. To understand the nature of language we must understand the nature of grammar. Grammar – is the study of the structure of human language. Language is a means of forming ideas as reflections of reality and exchanging them in the process of human intercourse. Language is social by nature; it is inseparable with the people who are its creators and users; it grows and develops with the development of society. Language is a system of signs. It can function as a means of cognition and communication due to the unity and interaction of its three constituent parts or subsystems.
II Try to find out the solutions of the following problems:
1.Give a full description about the objects and aims of Theoretical Grammar of English on the basis of the given brief information.
2.Give definitions of the basic grammatical notions as “grammatical meaning, grammatical form, grammatical category”;
3.Give some information of the two main parts of Grammar - morphology and syntax;
4.Characterize paradigmatic and syntagmatic relations of grammatical units.
III A) Analyse the following oppositions; define the morphological categories realized in each pair, state the markers:
girl – girl’s, look –is looking, cat-cats, speak – will speak, small – smaller, to build – to be built, go-went-gone, interesting-more interesting – the most interesting.
