COP Week 2 Facilitation Guide

Transition: Besides reflecting on your own teaching practices, you will need to observe at least one other Mentee. Let’s look at peer observations now.

Slides 15-23 – Peer Observations

  1. Give more information about peer observations:

Example script:

    1. You will also do peer observations.

    2. During a peer observation, you will:

      1. observe another Mentee’s lesson

      2. have a pre-observation conversation

      3. have a post-observation conversation

      4. ask the Mentee to reflect on their lesson

      5. give positive, effective feedback

    3. We will discuss 2-3 observations during each Friday CoP.

  1. Introduce parts of an observation.

Example script:

          1. There are 3 parts to a peer observation: pre-observation conversation, observation, and post-observation conversation. We will practice pre-and post-observation conversations in this session.

  1. Introduce pre-observation conversations.

Example script:

    1. Let’s look at the pre-observation conversation in the Pre-observation Conversation handout.

    2. There are two questions you should ask a Mentee before you observe them:

      1. Please tell me how you are using the TETE content in this lesson.

      2. Is there something you want me to particularly focus on?

    3. After you have the pre-observation conversation, you will observe the Mentee using the rubric.

    4. After the observation, you will have a post-observation conversation.

Transition: Let’s move on to post-observation conversations.

  1. Introduce the post-observation conversation.

Example script:

    1. In a post-observation conversation, the teacher reflects on their lesson and the observer can give effective, supportive feedback. Let’s practice a post-observation conversation.

    2. Look at the Post-observation Conversation handout.

  1. 2 Mentees model the post-observation conversation.

Example script:

    1. Can I have 2 volunteers to read the post-observation conversation?

    2. Everyone else listen and follow along on your handout.

  1. All Mentees practice the post-observation conversation.

Example script:

    1. Find your elbow partner.

    2. One of you will be the teacher, and one will be the observer. Read the post-observation conversation together.

  1. After they have read the post-observation conversation, Mentees will practice a post-observation conversation using the Eco Park lesson.

Example script:

    1. Let’s practice the post-observation conversation one more time with your partner.

    2. Decide who will be the teacher and who will be the observer.

    3. Look at the Eco Park handout.

    4. Change the post-observation conversation topic from making a complaint to Eco Park.

    5. When you finish, switch roles.

  1. When everyone has finished, ask the Mentees:

    1. What details about the Eco Park lesson did you include in the conversation.

    2. How did you feel during the conversation?

    3. Were you comfortable asking the questions? Why or why not?
