Towards the end of the 9
th
form, all students in lower secondary schools have to make 
a choice of upper secondary or vocational education on the digital platform 
www.optagelse.dk
. As mentioned above, the voluntary 10
th
form is an optional educa-
tional offer for young people who after finishing basic education are in need of addi-
tional academic qualifications and/or clarification regarding their further educational 
opportunities before enrolling in upper secondary or vocational education programs. In 
2001, 60.4 per cent of the students chose 10
th
form. Until 2007, the share of students 
attendending 10
th
form in the Folkeskole was decreasing while the share of students 
attending gymnasium was increasing (Danmarks Evalueringsinstitut 2011:29). In 
2014, the share was 48.3 per cent
