In parallel with the declining number of school-aged children, the number of students
in primary and lower secondary schools have been declining from 2008 to 2013 (see
Table 2.2). This development is particularly felt in the Folkeskole, whereas the number
of students in private schools in the same period was increasing. The share of students
attending private schools, including continuation schools, increased from 16.9 per cent
in 2008 to 19.1 per cent in 2013. Thus, the Folkeskole faces increased competition
from private schools. The setting and role of the private schools is further described in
Section 2.5.
