Brian J. Hurn is Visiting Lecturer at the London Academy of Diplomacy 
at the University of East Anglia (London Campus), teaching Cultural 
Awareness. He also lectures on International HR and Doing Business in Asia 
for INSEEC in London and at a consortium of French universities. He was 
formerly Associate Professor at Schiller International University in London 
and Associate Lecturer at the University of Surrey School of Management.
A graduate in Modern Languages from the University of Exeter, he has an 
MA in Education Administration and Postgraduate Certificate in Education 
from the University of London.
He was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Royal Army Educational Corps and is 
a graduate of the Army Staff College, having held key appointments in edu-
cation and training support at Sandhurst, in the Far East and at the Ministry 
of Defence. He was subsequently Director of Programmes at the Centre for 
International Briefing, Farnham, UK.
He is the author of numerous articles and international conference papers 
on cultural aspects of international relations and business.
Barry Tomalin is also Visiting Lecturer at the London Academy of Diplomacy
teaching Cultural Awareness and International Communication. In addi-
tion, he is Director of Cultural Training at International House, London.
He was formerly English Language Teaching Adviser to the government of 
Benin and was editor and producer of BBC English by Radio and TV at the 
BBC World Service. He was also Managing Director of Connect ELT Ltd.
He graduated from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University 
of London and has an MA in International Liaison and Communication 
from the University of Westminster. He is also a qualified teacher of English 
as a Foreign Language and is a member of the English Language Council of 
the English Speaking Union.
He has 30 years’ experience in training in over 50 countries. His publica-
tions include Key Business Skills (2012), The World’s Business Cultures and How 
to Unlock Them with Mike Nicks (2010) and Diverse Europe at Work with Jack 
Lonergan and Adam Duncan (2009).
