Lead-in
1 The quotation highlights the role of methods in academic 
research. Results often depend on the methods chosen. 
Learners’ own answers.
2 Learners may describe some country- and discipline-
specific features in this discussion. This is acceptable as 
long as they keep to the topic of the Method section.
Suggested answers
1 It provides the information needed for another competent 
scientist to repeat the work. In addition, it establishes 
credibility for the results and should therefore provide enough 
information about how the work was done for readers to 
evaluate the results.

Reading
3 Tell learners that Text 1 is another extract from the 
article about the media representation of depression 
in young people (Text 1 in Unit 1, Lesson 2). Draw their 
attention to the list of elements constituting the Method 
section and allow them enough time to complete this 
reading for detail activity.
