Comparison of the level of the environmental impact of the biogas plant using two different mixing systems in terms of impact categories in reference to FU. E. Wrzesi´nska-Jędrusiak et al. Journal of Cleaner Production 349 (2022) 131420 9 the biogas yield, and the methane yield amounted to 0.26–0.28 l CH 4 /g. However, the effect of mixing and the method of mixing became sig- nificant when dense slurry (10% and 15%) was fermented. Fermentation chambers fed with 10% and 15% slurry and equipped with external mixing produced around 10–30% more biogas compared to the non-mixed digester. It was concluded that mixing based on the biogas recirculation system was not effective for 15% slurry under the experi- mental conditions ( Karaeva et al., 2015 ). 4.2. Cumulative Energy Demand analysis The Cumulative Energy Demand (CED) of a product is based on the direct and indirect energy consumption over its entire life cycle. In the case of energy production from biogas, when the system boundaries are considered to be only stages for the use of the biogas plant, the energy demand was calculated for those stages included in the use process: slurry storage, methane fermentation process and energy production from biogas. The CED does not include the energy contained in mate- rials, id est raw materials for biogas production, but only the real form of energy. For biogas plants, the crucial role is played by the use of the energy generated for the plant’s operation and the energy contained in the fuel used for transport. For the analysed plant, road transport (slurry transported by pipeline) was omitted and only the energy required for two different mixing systems was considered.
