religious consciousness in the literary text», we have considered the notions of
intertextuality, precedence, strong and weak texts, knowledge structures, and
studied verbalization of mythological-religious consciousness in the literary text.
Mythological and religious texts as a source of precedence are considered to
be the «core» of the so-called «strong» texts. This means that mythological and
religious texts, being «prototexts», are axiologically significant for culture.
Mythological and religious texts have all the characteristics of precedent texts,
such as: 1) generally notable, i.e. being universally precedent, they are well-known
to representatives of various cultures; 2) recurrence of usage: mythological-
religious texts, plots, motifs, images are often used in various types of text (literary,
newspaper, publicistic, etc.), and in everyday communication; 3) reinterpretation:
these texts are reproduced in various forms of art (painting, sculpture, ballet, opera,
etc.); 4) axiological value: serve as cultural dominants to regulate the behavioral
norms of different cultures. 5) symbolic and imaginative characteristics: have
become symbols due to their ability to be associated with certain images;
6) cognitive value: activate different types of knowledge structures and help
penetrate into the deep semantics of a text.

74
The results of the analysis of the religious world picture representation in the
literary texts in the framework of the theories of intertextuality and precedence
indicate that the MRMLUs serve as an intertext, activating in the reader's mind the
mythological-religious texts and related to them knowledge structures.
Distinguished by notability, frequency of usage, reinterpretability, imagery,
symbolic, cognitive and axiological significance, mythological-religious texts
contribute to the «core» of «strong» texts. They function in the literary texts as
intertextual markers expressed with the help of mythological-religious allusions
that activate a certain precedent situation and its associative links, thus contributing
to the condenced representation of culturally and conceptually significant
information. To the peculiarities of textual verbalization of allusions we can refer
their ability to undergo occasional transformations, express opposite concepts
simultaneously, and acquire additional contextual meanings.
The fourth chapter «Basic concepts of the mythological-religious world
picture» elaborates the criteria of mythological-religious concepts (MRC)
categorization, identifies the notion of binarity as the main cognitive principle of
the categorization of the religious world picture and cultural values, reveals
symbolic essence of the MRMLU.
The results of our study indicate that most of the mythological-religious
notions acquire the status of cultural concepts distinguished by a high axiological
value and heterogeneity. This is due to the fact that mythological-religious
concepts (MRC) are an important constituent of not only the religious world
picture, but also a conspicuous component of the linguistic and national world
pictures. In the process of the investigation, we came to the conclusion that it is
possible to categorize mythological-religious concepts according to the following
criteria: 1) binarity; 2) universalism/ divercity; 3) axiological value;
4) core/periphery. It should be emphasized that most of mythological-religious
concepts can be classified according to either one of the above principles or all of
them. The analysis also proves that the structure of mythological-religious
concepts can undergo various transformations, losing their denotative meanings
and acquiring new conceptual meanings, often of an opposite character.
One of the assumptions developed in this investigation is that binarity is
considered to be a cognitive principle of categorization. Many scholars
acknowledge binarity to be a universal means of the world cognition, manifested in
perception and understanding of space, time, physiology, nature, cultural values,
etc. In other words, binarity is inherent in all spheres of human activity, including
social, spiritual, aesthetic, ethical and etc. Binary opposition is a cognitive
principle of the religious world picture (RWP) categorization, since the binary
nature of the RWP is observed at all the levels of mythologicall-religiously marked
linguistic units, such as vocabulary, phraseology, paremiology and text. Binary
opposition is distinctly manifested at the level of religious concepts that form
various conceptual spaces interconnected by internal and external opposite links.
The analysis of language material has also proved that many mythologically-
religiously marked linguistic units (MRMLUs) are symbolically significant.
Functioning as symbols they convey and encode a large amount of explicit and

75
implicit cultural information in the literary text. The analysis of language material
has proved that many mythologically-religiously marked linguistic units
(MRMLUs) are symbolically significant. Functioning as symbols they convey and
encode a large amount of explicit and implicit cultural information in the literary
text. As a result of the study, we identified the following symbolically significant
semantic groups of MRMLU: 1) religiously marked zoonyms (dove, stork, ibis);
2) toponyms marked by religious specifics: Mecca, Sodom and Gomorrah,
Babylon); 3) numerals that have religiously symbolic meaning: 1– the unity of
God; 7 – a symbol of universe wholeness); 4) colors that have religiously symbolic
meaning: white; black); 5) anthroponyms: Job, Joseph; 6) phytonyms: lily, rose
olive. The general features of mythological- religious symbols are: a) the
universality of symbolism; b) ambivalence of meanings; c) the ability to represent
a precedent situation and acquire additional symbolic meanings; d) to transfer a
large amount of encyclopedic mythological-religious knowledge in a concise form;
e) to perform symbolic and conceptually significant functions in the text.
On the basis of the conducted research, it is possible to draw a conclusion
about the need, significance and perspectives of singling out a new discipline in
Linguistics: Theolinguistics, which being of an interdisciplinary character is aimed
to study the reflection of the religious world picture in language.
