Historical Notes. Th e D io cese oE P atna was erected by a Papal decree oE Septe m ber 10, 1919. Th e D io cese in cl udes the whole oE the Eormer P r e f e c t u r e o f Nepal, and the eastern part o f the Dio ce se o f A lla h abad ly in g to the South oE the G anges, viz., all tbe dis tr ic ts oE North and Sontb Behar ( e x c e p t the two dis tr ic ts o f Purn eah and oE the Santal P a r g a n n a h s ) , the whole o f Nepal an d a small stri p o f about 80 square miles in the D a r je e lin g dis tr ic t. H i s t o r y . The history oE the D ioce s e may be said to be g in in 1620, when the Fathers o£ the S o c iety o f Jesus cam e to Patna at the in vitatio n o f the Na wab. Little is k n ow n o f the su b s e quen t history o f this first attem pt at evan ge lization at Patna. In 1626 we
find Jesuit M issio narie s w o r k in g in Tibet. Som e 70 years later the mission o f T ib et was en tr usted by the S Con greg. De P r o p a g a n d a to the Ca pu ch in Fathers, and in 1704, Rev. Fr. J o h n F r a n c is de Camerino was appointed tbe first P r e f e c t o f tbe Thib etan M is sio n , The territ ory o f the P r e f e c t u r e seems to have incl uded not on ly Tib et and Nepal, bu t also an exte n siv e part of the N orth ern In dia from the P u n j a b to the V i c a r ia te o f Calc utta . In 1745 tbe Mis sionaries were c om pell ed to leave Lhassa and T i b e t : they c o n tin u e d their A p o s to la te in Nepal and open ed a Dew Mis
sion at Bettiah. W h e n som e twenty years later, in 1769, the Fathers had to w ithdraw f r o m Nepal on a c c o u n t o f the p oliti cal unrest p r e v a ilin g in that c o u n tr y , tbe P r e f e c t o f the Mis sion chose Patna as the place o f his residence.

A s far b a c k as 1713 a subs tantial chu rc h and a re sidence fo r Missionaries had been erected in the town o f Patna. But in 1763 the chu rc h had been all but de str oyed by the soldiers o f the Nawab. The Prefe ct, R ev. Fr. Joseph a R ov eto, d ecide d to demolish the ruined b u il d in g and replac e it by a la rger church. In 1772 he laid the fo u n d a tion of the fine and s p a c io u s c hu rch that stands still to-day th ou gh p r actic ally unused f o r div in e se rv ic e, on a c c o u n t o f its is ola tio n in the M ah omedan qu arter o f Patna. Patna remained the Headquarters; o f the M ission until 1820. In that year the V i c a r ia t e A p o s t o l ic of A g r a was erected, and to it were g ive n all the territories form erly under the P r e f e c t s o f T ib et and Nepal. In 1.84.5 Pat na was detached from A g r a and made into a sep arate V i c a r ia t e , the saintly Dr. A. H artm an n being a p poin ted the 1st V i c a r A p o s t o l ic . F o u r V ica rs A p o s t o l ic in su c ce s sio n ruled the V i c a r ia te which extended from Alla habad to D arje eli ng. In 1871 Dr. T o si transferred the r esid en ce fr o m P atna to Alla habad, where a m agnific ent Cathedral had been erected. In 1886, on the es tablishm ect o f the H ie r a r ch y in India, the V i c a r ia te was raised to the d ig n ity o f a b i s h o p r i c , and Dr. P esci, the hist V i c a r A p o s t o l ic o f Patna, took the title o f Bish op of A llah ab ad. Six years later the dis tr ic ts o f North Bibar , i.e., Cham pa ran, Saran, Muzafferpur, D arbh an ga and pa rts o f the dis tr ic ts o f B b a g a lp u r and M o n g h y r w ere sep arated fr om the D io ces e o f A lla h a b a d and becam e the P r e f e c t u r e A p o s t o l ic o f Bettiah. The new P r e fe ct u r e was entr usted to the Capu ch in s o f North T y r o l ( A u s t r i a ) and made suifragan to the A r c h d i o c e s e o f A g r a . In 1893 the K in g d o m o f Nepal, hitherto s u b je c t to the D io ce s e o f A llah ab ad, was a d de d to the territ ory o f the new P r e fe ct u r e w hich then b e cam e the P r e fe ct u r e A pos to lic o f Bettiah and Nepal. In 1906, a stri p o f the D a r je e lin g D is trict was tran sfe rred fr o m the ju r is d i c t io n o f the A r c h b is h o p o f Calcutta to the ju r i s d i c t i o n o f the P r e f e c t A p o s t o l ic . A t the ou tbreak o f the war in 1915, the A u strian Fathers had to leave the Mission , and the Sacr. Co n g reg . de P r o p a g an da ap poin ted R e v . Fr. Felix. O.C., o f the L ah ore D io cese A d m in is t r a t o r A p o s t o l ic o f P r efectu r e.
