I Historical Notes. The V i c a r ia t e A p o s t o l ic o f Bengal was erected in 1834, and by a Pap al decree, F e b r u a r y 15, 1850, the V ica ria te A p o s to lic o f Eastern Bengal was separated from it. The origin al territ ory o f this V i c a r ia t e was curtailed by the establishment o f the P r efectu r e A p o s t o l ic o f Centra! Ben gal in 1870 and ag ain by the est ab lis hm ent o f the Prefect ure A po s to lic o f Assam in 1889. A t present, it c o m pris e s the districts o f
D ac ca , B a c k e r g a n j , M ym ensin g h , Pu bn a, Noakhali, Tipp erah, C h ittag o n g togeth er with the in depe n dent R a j o f Hill Tipperah and the P r o v i n c e o f A r a k a n in Burma. The last named was an n exed in the de li m it ati on o f 1870. It was constit uted a D iocese under the H ie rarch y in 1886. It is bo unded on the North b y the P r efectu r e A p o s t o l ic o f Assam, on the East by the V i c a r ia te s o f N orth ern and South ern Burma, on the South by the B a y o f Ben gal and on the West by the Ba y o f Bengal and the Dio ce se o f K ris h n a g a r. In 1855. at the request o f thu A r c h b is h o p Carew, V i c a r A p o s t o l ic o f Western Bengal, the C on g re g a tio n o f P ro pag an da sent out throe Missionaries fr om the Sem in ary o f St. Caloeer o o f Milan, w ho la boured io six o f the Distri cts o f the V ica ria te o f W e ste rn Bengal : Jessore, Nadia, Ba js ha hi, Moo rshedabad, Bogra, Malda and pa rt o f the Sun derb un ds, which were p r o v i s io n a ll y united in 1855 under the name o f Central Bengal. This Mission was crea ted a P r e f e c t u r e A p o s t o l ic in 1870, when the P r o v i n c e s o f Bootan and Assa m as also the d is tric ts o f D in a jp u r , Cooch Behar, R a n g p u r and F a r id p u r were added to the or ig in a l Mission o f 1855, and Father Marietti, then in Italy, was n om in ated in 1870 to be the first P r e f e c t A p o s t o l ic . On the resig n a tio n o f Father Marietti, the V e r y R e v . F. P o z z i , o f the V i c a r ia t e A p o s t o l ic o f H y de ra bad , was nominated P r e f e c t A p o s t o l i c in A p r il 1879. It was c onstituted a D io cese under the H ie r a r c h y in 1886. In 1889 the p r o v i n c e s o f Bootan and Assa m were made ov e r to the P r e f e c t A p o s t o l ic o f Assa m. Bishop.
