In 1545 the D om in ic an s in cha rg e o f M ala cca and of the M o lu c c a A r ch ip e la g o fou nded a sp ecial b ran ch o f their order, the c o n g re g a t io n o f the Ea st Indies w hich sent many missionaries, the most fam ou s a m o n g them being Father Bermudez. In 1546 St, F r a n cis X a v i e r visited M ala cc a . In 1558 Pope Paul I V erected a b ish o p ric at M ala cca and its first Bishop was the D om in ic an G e o rg e o f St, L u c ia . The
new d io c e se extended its ju r is d i c t io n all o v e r the F a r -E a st in clu d in g China, Corea and Ja p a n , until the crea tio n o f the See o f M acao. A f t e r 1783 the D io ce se was g ov e r n e d b y V ica rs -G e n e ra l under the A r c h b is h o p M etropolitan o f Goa. In 1838, M ala cca was tran sferred to the ju r i s d i c t i o n o f the V i c a r - A p o s t o l i c o f A r a and P e g u . In 1841, the Malayan P e n in su la was erect ed into a separate V i c a r ia te , in c l u d i n g the suppress ed See o f M ala cca, Singapore, P e n a n g and other stations in the straits fo rm ely under the ju r is d ic t io n o f the V i c a r A p o s to l ic o f W estern Siam.
The Isla nd o f So lor and T im o r ( O c e a n i a ) b e l o n g e d also to this Dio ce se. A t present the Isla nd o f T im o r ( P o r t u g u e s e Territory,) and two exempted c h u rc h es at M ala cca and S i n g a pore (w h ic h always remained u nde r thè P ortu gu e se j u r i s d i c tio n ) belong to the B ish opric o f M acao. 33
