In 1845 this mission was separ ated fr om the V i c a r ia t e A p o s to lic o f Madras and was co m m itte d to the care o f the Missionaries o f St. F r a n cis de Sales, and by a b r ie f o f Pius IX , A p r il 3, 1850, was erected into an A p o s t o l ic V ica ria te. It was constituted into a D io cese under the H ie rarch y in 1886. T a k in g into a c c o u n t the ch a n g e s in the d istrib u tion o f P rovin c es c arried out by G o ver n m en t in 1905 and the Decree of the S. Con gregati on o f P r o p a g a n d a in 1895 fixin g the bou ndaries between the two Djoceses o f N a g p u r and V i z a g a - patam, the latter may now be d e s cr ib e d as follows : — It c o m p r is e s .— I. Part o f the Madras P r e s id e n c y , viz., all the d is tric ts north o f the G o d a v a r i R ive r . II. Part o f the Central P r o v in c e s , viz., the N a tiv e State of Bastar, the Z a m inda ri o f A h ir i and the taluk o f S iron cha . III. Part o f Behar and Orissa, viz., the British dis tr ic ts and trib utary states o f Orissa, which lie south o f the Maha- nadi riv e r e x ce pt the dis tr ic t o f Sam balp u r and the states o f Sonapur and Patna. H i s t o r y . The first missionari es who la nded at P o n d ic h e r r y in J a n u a ry 1674 were the Capuch in s. They took care o f the E u ro pean s settled there. On the su ppre ssio n o f the'Jesuits in 1773, the whole field was en trusted to the Paris F ore ig n Mission Seminar y, in c l u d i n g the Madura and M ysore Missions where the dis ba nded Jesuit M issionaries contin u ed to w o r k under the new regim e till they g ra dua lly died out. In 1836, the mission was made into the V ic a r ia te o f Coro* mandel Coast. A t the same time the Jesuits who had been restor ed in 1814 were pla ce d o n c e more in c h a rg e o f M adu ra Mission, e x c e p t in g the por tion north o f the Cauvery R iv e r which was retained by P o n d ic h e r ry . In 1850 the vicari ate s o f M ysore and Coim bato re were separ ated fro m P o n d ic h e r ry , In 18S6 P o n d i c h e r r y was e rected into an a r c h b is h o p r ic with Mysore and Coim ba tore as suffragans.
