The whole of the te r r ito r y i n c l u d i n g British and Portu gu ese parts b elong ed to the A r c h d io c e s e o f G oa . T o g o v e r n the British te r r ito r y th ere was in B om b a y a V ic a r - G e n e r a l o f the A r c h b is h o p o f Goa, whose j u r is d i c t io n ex tended fr om the P or tu gu ese f r o n t ie r o f Dam aun in the North to K o r la y (C h a u l) in the Island o f C a ra nja ( K o l a b a Dt.) in the South, and bou n d e d on the W est by the A r a b ia n Sea, the W e s te r n Gha ts f o r m in g the g re a ter pa rt o f the East ern bou n dary. It was div id ed into f o u r d is tric ts : Is land o f B o m b a y , Sa lselte or Thana, Bassein and P o o n a . The
