Historical Notes : A f t e r the new route to In dia had been d is co v e r e d by V a s c o da G ama, the first care o f the K in g s o f P o r tu g a l was to sp read the Cath olic Faith th ro ug ho u t India. This is e v id e n c e d by the fa c t that on board A d m ir a l G a m a ’ s fleet there were so m e m onks a m o n g whom B\ P edro de Covilh am , a Trin ita ria n who was killed at Calicut. In 1500 with the se c o n d fleet, c o m m a n d e d by Peter A lv a r e s Cabral, c a m e som e F r a n c is c a n Fr iars, with Fr. H en ry de C oim bra as Su perio r. They were the first Po rtig ue s e M issio narie s who settled in India, and who u n d e r to o k the c o n v e r s io n o f the H in du s. A n g e d i v a island, near K ar w a r, supplie d the first neophytes, tw enty -th re e o f them b e in g b a p tised after the first Mass had been said in the Is la nd. Su b se qu e n tly m ore c o n v e r s io n s were made at C och in, Ca licut, Cann an ore, Q uilo n, etc . Shor tly after, these were follow ed by D o m in ic a n s and oth er orders. The e rectio n o f the B ish o p ric o f G oa dates from this time. The c h u r c h o f St. Catherine b e in g raised to the ra nk o f a Cathedral, D. F r a n cis de Mello was a p p o in te d its first Bishop and co n s e cr a t e d at L is bon . But, as the P o p e died w ithout se n d in g ihe Bulls o f e r ection of the See, these were expedited by his S u c c e s s o r , Pau l III, Const.
