H is t o r y . In the year 1637 M athews de C astro M ale, o f the B rahm in caste, was ap p oin ted V i c a r A p o s to lic o f the D eccan . T o the V ica ria te o f the D eccan w ere added in 1645 the k in gd om s o f G olcon d a and P eg u . But as the latter k in gd om was very rem ote, it was in 1669 separated from the a b o v e V ica ria te , and in its p la ce was su bstitu ted the region k now n as the K in g d om o f the grea t M ogu l, by w hich nam e the V ica ria te was a fterw ard s called . The M ission then had two V ic a r s o f the In stitu te o f St, P h ilip N eri, both o f the Brahm in caste. In 1696 its g overn m en t was com m itted to the D iscaloed C arm eiites. In the year 1720 fo r p o litic a l reason s, the E n glish expelled the P ortu gu ese c le rg y fro m B om bay, and offered the 118 B o m b a y , M ission to the V ic a r o f the G rea t M ogu l w ho, w ith the a p p ro b a tio n o f the H oly See, to o k ch a rg e o f it in the sam e year. The V ica ria te then began g ra d u a lly to assum e the name o f B om bay. O f this V ic a r ia te the n orth ern p a rt w as annexed to the M ission o f T ib et in 1784. B etw een 1850 and 1854 the M ission was a d m in istered by the C apu ch in s. Then P ope P iu s I X on 8th M arch 1854, d iv id e d the V ic a r ia te o f B om ba y in tw o, nam ely, the N orth ern or B om ba y, and the Sou th ern o r Poona V ica ria te s , en tru stin g the B om bay D is trict to the C a pu ch in F athers and the P oon a D istrict to the S o cie ty o f Jesus. F ou r years later, on the r e n u n cia tion o f the N orth ern M ission by the C apu ohin s, this p o rtion also w as g iv en o v e r to the S oeiety o f Jesu3 by a d e cre e o f the S a cred C o n g re g a tion , 18th A u g u s t 1858. and form ed in to on e M ission .
