The P refe ctu re was erected into a D iocose on M ay 22, 1913, and R t. R ev. Fr. F ortu n a tu s Caum ont, P r e fe ct A p o s to lic, was ap poin ted on the sam e day first B ish op o f the new D iocese. On the N orth the D iocese is bou n d ed by the N a tiv e State o f B ahaw alpur, w hich be lon g s to the L ah ore D iocese. In 1871 D r. P. In 1887 the D istricts o f D a r je e lin g and Purneah w ere taken aw ay fro m the D iocese o f A llah ab ad. In 1892 the D istricts o f C ham paran, Saran, M u zaffarn agar, D arbh an ga , B ettiah and parts o f the D istricts o f B h ag a lp ore and M on g h y r w ere erected in to a separate P r e fe ctu r e A p o s to lic under the title o f B ettiah, to w hich in 1893 was also added the K in g d om o f N epal. F in a lly, in 1919, the S tation s o f P atna, B a n k ip ore , K u r je e , D in a p o re , K h a ga u l, G aya, J a m a lp ore, and B h agal p o re , w ere detached from the D iocese o f A lla h a b a d , and added to the new D iocese o f P atna, en trusted to the Jesu its from M aryland P r o v in c e . The D io cese is b ou n ded on the South by the D iocese o f N a gp u r, on the W est by the A r c h d io c e s e o f A g ra , and on the N orth by the D io ce s e o f Patna an d by the H im ala ya M oun tains w hich exten d a lo n g the lim its o f the M ission.
