Today much attention is paid to learn foreign languages at schools. According to the decree of our president from 2013 English is supposed to be taught from the first grade, this requires special techniques and teaching skills of the teacher and their role is very important. In order to create a strong positive motivation of students, to learn the language and to achieve the most optimal level of learning, teacher should use modern methods of teaching which are enriched with audio visual aids. Using audio visual aids involves high motivation of students to study a foreign language that enables variety forms of learning. The process of learning a foreign language becomes fun and easy. There are different types of audio visual aids such as: pictures; posters, television, video, flashcards, mod els, maps, puppets, toys real authentic objects, internet, email and many others. I‘d like to talk about the use of pictures. A picture is worth a thousand words. Process of teaching has three mains components. The components are teachers, students and instructional material. A good teacher should have a great deal of knowledge in using teaching aids when they are teaching, teachers also had better know any kind of teaching aids or media in order that their activity are more effective. Pictures are common thing in our daily life, they can be found everywhere. Teachers may also draw pictures and bring them into a classroom or ask learners to draw some pictures related to the topic and ask them to describe the picture. Pictures help learners to predict, deduce, infer information, analyse today‘s world so that it can be brought into today‘sclassroom. Another beneficial reason for using pictures is authenticity. Supardjo and Andayani believe that in the teaching and learning process the picture can be used as learning media. They emphasize that pictures as the media provide many benefits and give real impression to the students which can be media for comprehension of learning topic besides it can stimulate speaking activity. Picture stories: the pictures should be mixed and the students should guess and put them in order make up a story according to the picture. Memory games: The teacher places a selection of pictures or objects and students have a few minutes to memorize them and tell as many of the names as they can remember. Story circle: a picture will be shown to the students and according to the picture one student begins a tale and stops after a few sentences, the next student picks up the story thread and continues it then stops. Next student adds to it and so on until the tale comes to a resolution. When selecting a picture, some points should be kept in mind. The coloured pictures are more effective than black and white ones and can be used for many purpose, the picture should tell the learner something familiar to connect it with real life. They should be related to learners‘ previous experiences, they can be associated with places, objects, persons, even ts or animals of which they are familiar.
