Dr. David Smith - How To Quit Porn (2nd Edition)

Develop an interesting game
Games are great ways to incentivize good behavior. Create a game that helps lead you away from
addiction. Create a points system. Assign point values to different tasks to encourage you to do them.
Some of these activities can be other things mentioned in this list, like visit somewhere interesting.
You will be motivated to do rewarding tasks and get a high score.

This can correct the mental utility you get from certain tasks, and how you view rewards and
punishment. It can incentivize good behavior like delaying gratification and making hard decisions
that will benefit you in the long-term. Make sure to reward yourself greatly for defeating an urge.
Read more, waste time and mental energies less
You want to get your mind out of the gutter, to change the way you think. There is almost no faster
and better way to access completely new knowledge and a fresh perspective on many things than by
reading a book. Unlike music, movies, and television, which are focused and designed to give you
some kind of emotional reaction, books think in a more logical way, and encourage active
consumption rather than passive. You have to be thoughtful, and you will be able to arrive at your
own interpretations and original thoughts.
One odd solution that I will provide is to initially read children’s books to get into reading more.
Find something fun that is not too mentally taxing. Or listen to an audiobook and follow along
closely. Children have a fresh perspective on the world and a clean mind. In many ways, this is the
ideal state that you should be seeking. Children’s books are focused on the fundamentals and big
picture, which can be so refreshing when you don’t have to be focused on the details.
For video games, there are some that are beautiful and artistic, while others are crude, meaningless
and mentally destructive. I will draw a clear distinction here between single-player and multi-player
video games, where single-player games can be good, while impersonal multi-player games are bad.
Single player games can be introspective, requiring careful thought and creativity. Oftentimes they
focus on mastery of certain elements or an individual’s creativity. However, large multiplayer games
are completely different. Often they delve into a large world of PvP, where everyone is desperately
trying to kill each other. These games are built on frustration, taking advantage of our survival
instinct to bring out violence and the worst aspects of human behavior, involving rage quits yet
somehow a victory is never satisfying. Many games don’t even have a way to truly win. These are
based on false existences, flashes of light and color and sound, and artificial stimulation, making
these a perfect gateway drug – many people will go straight to watching porn after they get tired of
these games. Unlike getting some real reward from prevailing in a battle, these forms of artificial
stimulation only increase the allure of the virtual world at the expense of living in reality, which so
many of these addicted people will view as boring.
Gaming and porn use are often linked, especially when video games no longer offer the reward that
people seek out. It is easy for porn use to follow after hours of gaming.
Gambling is destructive in a similar way – basically no one can ever win a significant amount to
make it worthwhile, but the rabbit hole is there to go down once you start playing. If you win, you
are encouraged to chase your win. If you lose, you will try to make up your loss. The fact that losses
hurt more than wins feel good and that you are more likely to lose only serves to perpetuate this

harmful cycle. Just going into a casino and seeing the depressive state of people at the slot machines
is horrifying to a first-time observer.
Really the only way to solve these problems is to see them for what they are. Disentangle your
emotions from the situations and analyze the situation objectively. You will know that these things
do not truly make you happy. Pay attention to the urge – that is really all it is. It’s some impulse in
the brain that wants to be satisfied. Except it never will be. Fight it – you know that you will be
happier when you do not succumb to the urge. If you do not satisfy it, it will actually go away soon.
And after you beat the urge and it has no power over you, you will only experience a feeling of
satisfaction and happiness that you did not give in.
