Make sure you are doing this on a routine schedule and putting all your focus into this. It is important for you to make time for yourself, where your mind can clear itself and think in quiet, not being disturbed or distracted. People spend too much time on their phones and devices, which leads to a chronic overstimulation of the brain. The brain may be already tired, but seeing new content on a bright screen causes the mind to overexert itself. For young people, this is especially harmful as their brain is still developing. They are stuck doing something that they don’t even want to be doing, simply wallowing in a habit. Many who aren’t aware are constantly seeking out more gratification even when they don’t want it or when it is harmful for them. An overstimulated brain is likely to chase porn, as it is always craving for something more. It is also harder to quit when your mind is overstimulated, because you will have the lack of clarity and discipline to act effectively in difficult times. Learning to clear your mind and be present in the moment will prepare you for stressful situations. Just like exercise for your body, mindfulness is strength training for the mind. Consistent and deliberate effort to be more mentally strong and aware will help significantly. Carve out some time consistently each day to reflect and plan. 3) Rely on habits instead of discipline We are not born with large differences in our capacity for willpower and ability to exercise discipline. Our willpower wears out just as our physical body gets tired after strenuous exercise. Therefore, the lessons here are to budget willpower to have at hand in critical moments, as well as gradually increasing the mind’s endurance and capability to discipline itself. People like to stress the use of willpower and discipline in beating addiction. However, since people have similar amounts of willpower, what separates those who have succeeded from those who have not is how they have used their discipline. Discipline must be saved for when it is necessary, so budget it in a thoughtful manner. Do not waste it on easy tasks. Getting the easy tasks right should not take discipline, but instead requires getting good habits first. Once you master habits, discipline can be saved for situations where it is necessary. We still can work towards strengthening our willpower and discipline through practice. For example, maintaining good posture has been shown to improve the mind’s strength and discipline. Continuous improvement is necessary in many facets to increase mental fortitude. |
